Sneem Ogham Tree Trail

· Ogham Lore Team

In the 1800s, Bishop Charles Graves became one of the most important figures in the decipherment and cataloguing of Ogham inscriptions. His meticulous work documenting stones across Ireland helped lay the groundwork for modern understanding of the script. But his legacy lives on in an unexpected place — a small village on the Ring of Kerry.

A Village Project With Ancient Roots

Sneem, Co. Kerry, is home to one of Ireland’s most charming heritage walking trails: the Ogham Tree Trail. The project was born from the community’s desire to honour both the ancient script and the natural world it was always intertwined with.

Each of the 20 traditional Ogham letters carries the name of a tree or plant — Beith for birch, Dair for oak, Saille for willow, and so on. The Sneem trail brings this connection to life in a remarkable way: hand-carved wooden sculptures represent each tree species, with iron Ogham letters and educational signage placed alongside living specimens of the actual trees.

Walking the Trail

Visitors to the trail encounter each Ogham letter as a physical, tactile experience. The carved posts show the letter’s Ogham form, its tree association, and its traditional meaning. Walking the trail in sequence, you effectively learn the entire Ogham alphabet in the environment that inspired it.

The living trees planted alongside each marker grow over time, creating a trail that changes with the seasons. In spring, the birch marker stands beside silver-barked trees coming into leaf. In autumn, the oak post is surrounded by acorns and browning leaves.

The Bishop’s Legacy

Bishop Graves’ contribution is acknowledged throughout the trail. His 1876 work The Ogham Inscriptions of Ireland, Wales, and Scotland (co-authored with R.R. Brash) remains a foundational text in Ogham scholarship. That a 19th-century bishop’s academic obsession should result in a 21st-century community walking trail in the heart of Kerry is precisely the kind of unexpected continuity that makes Irish heritage so compelling.

The trail is free to walk and open year-round. It’s a short, pleasant route through Sneem village and is suitable for all ages. If you’re driving the Ring of Kerry, it’s well worth the stop.
