Why the Forearm Works So Well for Ogham

Ogham is a vertical script. On standing stones it runs along the edge of the stone from base to tip — a direction that maps directly onto the inner or outer forearm, running from wrist to elbow. No other Celtic script has this natural alignment with the human forearm.

The inner forearm gives the most usable length — typically 15 to 20 cm — which accommodates inscriptions of 6 to 12 characters comfortably. A full Irish name, a meaningful word, or a short phrase all sit well. The outer forearm works for slightly shorter inscriptions.

Forearm Ogham tattoos are also highly legible. Because the script runs in a single line, a person who knows Ogham can read your tattoo at a glance. That legibility is part of the appeal — it is not decorative; it says something.

• Direction: Run the inscription bottom-to-top (wrist toward elbow) to follow the traditional stone convention. This reads naturally when you raise your arm.
• Stem line: Including the explicit stem line (the central vertical line) gives the tattoo a more traditional, architectural appearance. Omitting it for just the strokes produces a lighter, more minimal look.
• End markers: The ᚛ and ᚜ markers at the start and end of the inscription are traditional. Including them balances the composition and frames the text.
• Line weight: A heavier stem line with lighter strokes reads well at scale and ages better than uniformly thin lines.
• Size: Most forearm Ogham tattoos work best at 1.5–2 cm wide (the stroke span) and 12–18 cm tall. Too small and the fine strokes become indistinct over time.
