Provenance

Discovery: First discovered by Petrie in 1822. Lost before 1872 and refound probably between 1954 and 1958. One of hundreds of cross-slabs discovered at St. Ciarán’smonastery of Clonmacnoise.

Decoration: Linear cross with wedge shaped terminals.

Condition: Badly worn with natural fissure. Cement damage (SMR record OF005-023018-).

Inscription

Text field: On a stem-line on the face of the cross-slab beneath the Latin-letter inscription.

Letters: Apart from the carved stem-line, there is also a feathermark to the left of the inscription. However, the text only makes sense when read from right to left (the opposite direction to that indicated by the feather-mark). The vowel (o) is carved with long stokes of equal length to the consonant strokes. All of these are generally late (reformed) features.
